1. What did you do before you were a farmer/rancher?
I worked in the fashion industry, traveled and lived in Brasil for a few years. I was pretty footloose and free as they say, not rooted in any place like I am today!
2. How did you come up with the name for your farm?
In Portuguese Jóia means jewel, and I see land as a jewel. Land is precious; it can shine and sparkle, and it is invaluable, especially land that has been stewarded by my ancestors.
3. What is the wildest idea you have had that worked?
That I could create an inexpensive, yet structurally sound farm-made mobile shade structure. It withstands 60+ mph straightline winds and provides shade, cafeteria style minerals, and water for our livestock.
4. Why did you choose to return to Iowa to farm?
I wanted to honor the land my grandparents stewarded and worked so hard to purchase. And I needed to learn the how of the mainstream way and understand for myself why farmers are doing what they are doing. I also wanted to be a part of the climate solution, actively participating in it versus just being on the consumer end.
5. Describe your favorite meal.
A big leafy green salad with a grass-fed Jóia Food Farm lamb chop.
